IMEI numbers and serial numbers are in no way connected.

Serial numbers are unique to Apple (or, actually, any given manufacturer). IMEI are globally unique and used to identify devices on a mobile network. Billions of devices have an IMEI and, in fact, the chance of any IMEI matching the serial number of any device (from Apple or elsewhere) is infinitesimally small.

They are not the same. If you go to Settings>General>About, you will see each listed separately. They are totally different unrelated numbers. The Serial Number is the unique number assigned to your device by Apple and is used when you create your Support Profile or initiate an online support request. The IMEI number is an Electronic Serial Number that is used to identify your unique Mobile Device and provides a way for your cellular company to block your device at your request if it is lost or stolen.
