Q: Split view, vertical split?

I was wondering if there was any way to use the new split app feature in El Capitan in a vertical split? If not how can I give this hint/complaint for the next update to apple? It seems like something which is quite easy to implement. I am now using Spectacle for this feature which could be unnecessary use of third party apps. I read a lot of scientific articles and these are not written for horizontal splitting and it is a bit waistefull to print everything.

Cheers,

Eyzo

Split View is done in a vertical split, if by vertical split you mean side-by-side rather than one on top of the other.  To enter Split View, hold down the green button in the upper left corner of the app's window.  If when you hover your mouse over it, it's a cross, that app can't be used in Split View.  If it's a double-ended arrow, it can be.  So, hold down the green button and then drag the window into either the left corner or the right corner.  Click on the other open app you have that can be put in Split View, and it will fill the other half of the screen.  It should look like this:

I mean the 90° rotation of what you just posted.

    thanks of the quick response.

I have found the customer recommendations.

Split View is done side-by-side, not one on top of the other.  That is the vertical split.  You asked if Split View was done that way, and I said yes.  Turning the image 90° would no longer make it a vertical split, thus negating what you're asking for.  So, I have no idea what it is you want.

FWIW, Split View gives a much larger reading area than the "horizontal split" you show in your screen shot. Also you can arrange windows the way yours are pictured manually.

Could you elaborate on the manual arranging?

I do not know how to get it in to the horizontal split in split view.

I can only slide the "center bar" sideways, thats all.

On the reading area I strongly disagree, the area is the same only the scale is different.

The problem with this is that if you are viewing pdfs (or other media where text is not automatically rearranged horizontally)

with the vertical split you have only two options: Ant sized fonts or the text dropping off the page.

    cheers

Manual as in open two pages or two programs then resize them and stack them the way yours are.

You can strongly disagree if you like but you see much more of the GUI in your screen shot, hence "less area". The scale is only different if you make it so. But, next time I see any books, magazines or journals split horizontally I may change my mind.

Alright thanks, I already got that as you can see from the picture.

Maybe I should have elaborated on what I was trying to do with the split screen feature.

The point of this query is I can not view full screen pdfs (thus no GUI visible) or full screen anythings in horizontal split with this new split screen feature.

I would like this option to be there, its seems not to be there so I put the request on the User Tip Contributions.

If it is there could someone please explain how it works?

Again, Split View is a vertical split. What you show is a horizontal split. And, seeing most PDFs and other media are in a profile format rather than landscape, you will see more of them at one time when arranged side by side since that's their orientation.

There is no horizontal Split View.

Again I understand and that is not the point. Again if you use a pdf in the vertical arrangement then either the print is small or it falls of the page (because the text is static i.e. does not rearrange when changing the window size instead the whole page scales and the print reduces). I do not need to see the full page at one time just being able to read the lines conveniently in different parts of the page is the constraint.

That is what I wanted to know, I posted the request, lets hope they do it and I will manage with the manual arrangement for the time being.

    Thanks a lot.

Posting a request on the User Tip contributions isn't going to do anything.  You need to send Apple feedback.

    http://www.apple.com/feedback

They won't respond, but if enough people all submit feedback wanting the same thing, it could show up in a future update.  It more than likely will not, though.  Just a guess.

What you want is something like this…

    Screen Shot 2016-04-23 at 9.50.39 AM.png

I'm not sure why you want to look at the same PDFs in split view or two different PDFs, But it's certainly easy enough to do manually without split views or third party software.

Personally I can't imagine many people would to justify adding such a feature.
