Q: iPhone 6 Plus screen freezes after iOS 9.3.1 update

I'm usually pretty lucky with iOS updates, but as the thread title states, straight after the recent 9.3.1 upgrade on my iPhone 6 Plus, the touchscreen now freezes at random times. I'm a medium to heavy user and this annoying screen freeze happens at least twice a day, sometimes as much as 7 or 8 times with only the hard buttons (home, power, volume) that still function. This never happened before the update, and the only way out is the soft reset (home+power buttons) option. This is not just localised to a couple of apps, but seems to be anything touchscreen related.

This is becoming a real pain in the neck, especially when writing an email or text message with no way to save what is already written using copy and paste, as I obviously need the touchscreen to do so. Is anybody else facing the same issue after the iOS 9.3.1 upgrade, and are there any possible fixes to this, although I strongly suspect it's a software issue that only Apple can sort out with an update fix?

Thanks.

Been having the same issue with mine. I tried everything to fix it including working with Apple support. I did find a fix (by accident) that seems to be working. I shut off my wifi and noticed it didn't freeze as much. I then googled wifi and iPhone 6 Plus freezing.  Ran across a post the described a) first shut off your wifi b) reset your wifi network settings. I did this and it's not freezing anymore.  I've experimented by turning it back on and connec to one wifi at a time and using for a day. I'be been able to add my home wifi (Google onhub router) and it seems to be fine -

but I haven't left the house so I'm not sure if it will start freezing if I'm out of range. Also found our PKI work wifi definitely causes issues if I connect to it.  Anyhow I'm still experimenting but turning off wifi and resetting wifi network definitely works. I was on 9.3.1 and upgraded to 9.3.2 but that made no difference.

II've loaded 9.3.2 and it's much better. Still freezes but for just a few seconds. I'll try resetting network settings to see if it gets better still or goes away.

Just to add that I've now updated to 9.3.2 hoping there would be I fix for this freezing issue. Unfortunately there was not, and updating has made no difference to the screen freezing issue. WAKE UP APPLE, AND GET THIS SORTED.

I found a (horrible) workaround for my needs, but it may help others here with similar symptoms.  When the screen stops responding to touch input I press the "sleep" button, the phone immediately goes dark and then can immediately press the home button to login again (using the fingerprint reader).  The touch screen input will work, sometimes for less than five seconds, but other times for several minutes before locking up.  This does not help much when I want to accept an incoming phone call using the touch screen, as pressing the sleep button declines the call, but it is a lot faster than the full restart procedure.

I am now confident that this is a touch screen problem, the phone continues to function the entire time in the background.  For example, when the screen does not respond to my touch, such as answering a phone call, it will answer and properly respond to a Bluetooth device. The phone's touch screen will lock up at random times, both when carried as well as when at rest.  Slightly torqueing the screen (an idea suggested) with the idea of a bad connection between the screen and the CPU offers no relief to the problem.  My screen lockup is random, I think i have normal use of the iPhone 6+ nine out of ten uses, but when it locks up i am annoyed.  I upgraded to iOS9.3.2 this week even though the release notes did not provide any hope that the screen problem would be fixed.

I had a Blackberry Storm many years ago before purchasing my first iPhone - I could not keep a phone that continuously would lock up and fail to function in its most basic service.  Deja vu.  Dear Apple, please fix your problem with iPhone 6+ units.

    UPDATE

NOTHING has worked. My husband, who works in IT, has been assisting me in troubleshooting with no solid solutions. After a full restore, and minimal apps installed it worked well for about a week. Once it started glitchy I have found some success with removing the sim card and doing a hard reset. Sometimes my phone doesn't want to do a hard reset though either. My wifi is definitely involved in the glitching - I can predict that when I connect it to the wifi at the hospital I work at that I will start having issues. So, I have a genius bar appointment this week. I will be very clear that they will replace my phone and will continue to replace it until it works normally. My husband has the same exact phone, and has NEVER had this problem. Both of my 6+ have had the same issues.

    GRRRR!

I feel your pain. This really bites doesn't it?  I thought I'd add a point to @Alaskanmama who mentioned WiFi. My freezing issue happens either using WiFi or a cellular (3G, 4G LTE) connection. I tried the other suggestion about pressing the power/sleep button that was mentioned in a previous post just a short while ago when the screen froze... and it seemed to work. Just waiting for the next freeze to try it again.

I Don't know if you guys that have posted here have noticed, but I find that a few times that after doing a soft reset (holding power+home buttons), I have to do it  again almost straight away as I either cannot enter the passcode, of when the passcode is entered, as soon as I touch the screen again... no response again.

COME ON APPLE. This thread has been running for a few weeks now with more and more users reporting the same issue. Any chance of a response from you to  acknowledge the issue???

This same problem was happening on my husband's iPhone 6 Plus. It seems to have start occurring after the iOS 9.3.1 update and got progressively worse. So, when 9.3.2 was released, he updated and it got even worse. We did many restore/resets, etc, just like everyone else did from reading this discussion. The 1st time we took it to Apple Genius Bar, they ran diagnostics and nothing was found to be wrong. They said it could be "apps" crashing in the background. This was not the case as it was clearly happening even when all apps were closed. So, we took it home and did a system restore the next time it happened, which did not help at all. This weekend, we took it back to the Apple Genius Bar....they proceeded to do a complete system restore. While waiting for that to be done, the genius checked the serial number in the system. She proceeded to tell us that she always does this check to see if there were any recalls, etc. Something the other genius did not do. Turns out that our Serial # is one of a "few" that have been deemed not fixable. So, since our warranty was up in October, they would not replace it for free.....very convenient   I asked why a recall was not done if they knew of this problem with certain serial #'s and the reply was that it would have to be a larger group that was effected. They "gave" us $300 toward a replacement, which we reluctantly applied toward the new iPhone 6s Plus. Still cost $500 out of pocket. Not too happy with Apple right now. I really think they should have recalled the serial numbers.

So to all those having this issue, I would ask to have your serial number checked.

Well at least i feel kind of relief to know that apparently this is not a particular problem with my iphone. I must say that i fell dissapointed. It is the first time I feel that apple sold me a disposable phone.  I don't live in the United States so I don't know what type of guarantee applies for my country. It is in fact very frustrating.

After  trying everything listed here the freezing/lockout kept on happening. on the second trip to the Genius Bar, they replaced the screen, problem solved. It was still under warranty, so no charge.

All good for a week now.

Same problem after upgrading to 9.3.2.  I also tried all the normal fixes, hard restart, shutdown, etc..and nothing.  I was about to give up and was just about to restore to factory defaults and start fresh so I plugged my iphone into my desktop and decided to re-sync phone / back-up data just to play it safe etc...so I simply right clicked on iPhone in the iTunes app and presto screen starting responding immediately.  (maybe a power deal during install) I had no need to restore to factory defaults.  I'm shocked that this it all it took to get it back to normal.  Good luck to all.

I'm glad to know that they replaced your screen. I hope it works fine now and wont have the screen freezing issue again. I guess the 9.3.2 didnt resolved our issue.

I just noticed that my screen usually freezes when there is an app that needs an update. Yesterday, my screen freeze again, so i thought i should check an app update, but nothings appearing in the app store, until i found out that the AUTOMATIC UPDATE is on in my settings. So i turned it off then the app that needs an update showed up in the app store. I updated it and my screen is OK.

I thought the issue was completely resolved after that, but just this morning my screen freeze up again, then i noticed that my facebook messenger needs an update. Do you guys think that its possible that our screen is freezing because of an app update? which is not supposed to affect our screen.

If the problem is that the touch screen doesn't respond, and some lines begin to appear at the top of the phone, the problem is with a sensor that is right behind the camera, above the sim card. I've seen some videos in youtube and apparently it does has a fix. Here is the video i'm talknig about. https://youtu.be/RkLmWIQlAs4
