Unable to export/share from iMovie

Hi,

I'm having trouble trying to export/share iMovie (10.1.1) to a file. The process either freezes at a random point or throws a 10008 error.

It doesn't seem to matter what video that I try to export, for the last 2-3 months I always get the same result. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating.

These are my Macbook specs:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory : 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

Here is an extract from the log file of my most recent attempt. Hopefully someone can help. Thanks:

Sreyanne, no one seems to be helping us, so I've been trying to get this to work everyday this week and I have just now managed to export a 40+ minute movie to a file!

If you look at my log report above, I had a couple of Disk 1: I/O errors and I think these are pretty bad.

I was watching a youtube video while trying to export and my whole screen went pink and unresponsive. When I forced a reboot, I got a panic error and the macbook wouldn't boot.

Now I have had this issue before and I had to replace the SATA cable. So, I took the back of the macbook off and re-seated the SATA cable into the socket of the motherboard and also re-seated the RAM. I left the back off and put the Macbook on its end with the screen set to the open position so that the hard drive wouldn't fall out (not screwed in) and the macbook wouldn't fall over.

I left it like this and rebooted and the mac was ok again (I ran a disk check just to be sure and all was ok). So with the macbook running but the back off, I tried to share my iMovie file, and it worked!!!!

So I suspect that either the hard drive or RAM had a faulty/loose connection and iMovie was falling over when trying to write a large file (smaller files seemed to be ok).

In summary, I would run Utilities > Console and look for any File I/O errors and maybe (at your own risk) make sure that the SATA cable and RAM is seated correctly.

UPDATE:

I have just tried exporting another file with the laptop put back together and the iMovie export froze with a disk1: I/O error.

So, took the back off again and rebooted, and shared the same movie and it worked fine.

It appears that I have a slight hardware problem (most likely SATA cable issue). I'm going to let Apple have a look at it as I've tried to replace the SATA cable and clearly there are still issues.

Hope this helps in some way.

Shun_di , thank you for your answer. I think I found my problem too, I tried again today: after looking at other blog communities, I checked my movie again and found out that one picture was defective, strange as I shared already my movie about 4 times before. I don't know how it got damaged, but I could replace it and was able to share it ... finally !

So it seems that error 10008 means there's something wrong with one data, and in your case hard disk .

Would be nice if they could put a list of all different errors so we can check at the right place ...
