Absolutely, in one of the following ways:
- If you have cellular service on the iPad, your friend can text them directly to you as there will be a phone number associated with your iPad.
- If you do not have cellular service on the iPad, and you own an iPhone, set the iPad as a Text Forwarding device on the iPhone. Any messages sent to your phone via SMS/MMS will also appear on the iPad.
- If you have neither of the above, have him email them to you. 😉
There were 4 of us on a week long trip during which we took a lot of pictures. Is there any way to handle bulk transfers to a special file so they can be merged with many others?
FYI, the cellular number provided with an iPad (if it is a wi-fi/cellular model) is not a number that can be texted to. It exists only as an account number for billing purposes. It cannot receive SMS or phone calls. The SIM for a cellular iPad is for data only. The iPad can receive SMS if you have an iPhone and have it set for SMS forwarding.

In that case, you would be better of using something like DropBox, or other file handling type service.
There's a reasonably high likelihood that the Android users are already backing their photos up to their Google Photos account. They can create an album of all of the photos and then simply share them out from there.
