Q: Failed to install Windows 10

I am using iMac 27'' Retina 5K Late 2014, OS X El Capitan 10.11.4, on Boot Camp Windows 10.

Today I have damaged one software, which I need, so I have decided to reinstall. I did a backup of my data, rebooted to OS X, removed Windows.

Then I've downloaded Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft on Windows machine (because you can't get ISO directly, you need to run .exe), transferred to my iMac.

Using Boot Camp Assistant, I have made install USB for Windows 10. I have allocated about 300GB for Windows. After reboot to installer, I have formatted partition "BOOTCAMP". When I selected it to install Windows into, this somehow failed. The installer doesn't want to install Windows on that partition.

I have tried this three times, nothing has changed.

Does anyone have an idead, what I am doing wrong? When I was first installing Windows on Boot Camp, all went fine.

What is the exact error message?

Do you have a 3Tb Fusion drive?

Thanks for reply, I have 1TB Fusion Drive. It was saying that it failed to create new region nor find existing region. Something like that, I was installing slovak version.

    1. Please see Boot Camp: "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one" alert during Windows 8 install - Apple Support and disconnect all external devices.

    2. From OS X Terminal, please post the output of

         diskutil list

         diskutil cs list

The failed installation may leave partitions which will interfere with the next installation attempt.

    3. Run a SMC/NVRAM reset before your next installation attempt.

That is good point, when I tried it for the first time, I did not disconnect HDD with my backups.

Disconnect all your external storage, run the SMC/NVRAM reset, and only connect your USB installer, partition and try again.

OK, so I have disconnected power cord, 15 seconds, reconnected, 5 seconds, power button. Shutdown, Power button, Cmd Option P R after I heard the startup sound. Before next startup sound, I have got firmware password request, I have entered. I ended inside Utility OS X. Does this mean, that I should remove firmware password, and do it again?

Are you in OS X Local Recovery? After the SMC/NVRAM reset, boot normally. Connect your USB Installer and run BC Assistant, select the last option 'Install...' and partition and follow the steps.

I do not know, if I did the NVRAM reset. I have told you, what happened. However, I have tried installing Windows, again failed. So, do I have to remove firmware password, and do the reset again?

No, the firmware password should not interfere with the installation. After disconnecting all external storage, and SMC/NVRAM reset, can you boot normally into OS X? Do you have a Bootcamp partition on your disk now?

After failed attempt to install Windows, I had to enter Utility OS X to change startup disk, but now yes, I can boot into OS X. I am now removing the Windows partition using BC.

I am not sure, if we understand each other. When doing NVRAM reset, I did not hear the second startup sound - so maybe I actually didn't reset the NVRAM.

You do not need to remove the partition, but just disconnect the external storage and re-execute NVRAM reset.  If diskutil list shows only one BOOTCAMP entry on the HDD, you should be fine.

I have removed firmware password, did the resets again, now the installation succeeded. Thanks for help.

My last question, could you explain me internals of what happeened? What did I corrupt by installing Windows with other storage device connected? How did NVRAM reset resolve this issue?

BC Assistant sets values in NVRAM that are required for the 4-5 reboots that Windows needs. It also sets the path to the Bootcamp partition, the path to the Windows installer, etc. Windows installer is confused when you run it and it has an external storage and internal storage to work with. The paths of potential Windows targets include an external disk.

On some Macs, the installer creates worse problems, for example - Can´t get my full Space back .

Unfortunately, BCA does not clean up NVRAM when it fails, so it needs to be manually cleaned using a NVRAM reset. Instead of a USB/FW/TB HDD, if you had a USB Flash drive, it would work, but flash drives of 64Gb or larger can also cause problems, because they are seen as external non-SATA/PCI disks.

Here is an example of a working Mac with Bootcamp and OS X EFI Boot information.
