Garageband no audio with external mixer connected

Using Garageband with USB/MIDI keyboard controller, sounds are fine. All audio is muted when external USB mixer is connected.

Keyboard > Powered USB hub > Camera adapter > iPad Pro: sounds with touch instruments are OK

Mic > Mixer > Powered USB hub > Camera adapter > iPad Pro: sounds are muted, whether mixer is turned on or off. Signal level indicates signal getting from keyboard to garageband, and from mic to garageband, but there's no audio from speakers or phones, if connected.

Followed settings in GarageBand for iOS: No audio when monitoring external device - Apple Support

Settings > General > Accessibility: Mono Audio off

Settings > GarageBand: Guitar Amp Crosstalk Protection off

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks

Update: Alesis MultiMix 4 USB is, indeed, class compliant. Connecting mixer USB > hub > camera adapter > iPad Pro results in no audio from iPad because output is being routed through USB back to the mixer. Plugged in phones per suggestion from a tech contact elsewhere and voila! Sound in the phones and level indication on the meters. So it seems the iPad is handing off audio out put to the mixer via USB.
