iMovie burned to DVD-R or +R will not play on iMac, MacBook Pro, or Blu-Ray DVD player.

On my iMac (late 2013, bought new in January 2015) I put together and then burned a 4.58 GB iMovie directly onto a DVD-R disk. At first it would only play on my MacBookPro 2011 with a very clear picture; later it wouldn't even play there. It failed to play properly on my Blu-Ray DVD player (choppy video then it froze one minute in; audio was fine) and my iMac (displaying the message "Supported disc not available"). At first, I burned the 30 minute iMovie onto discs with iDVD (from my iMac), dragging the 4.58 GB movie into the iDVD program. But that iDVD version (as listed in Finder) is a mere 40.2 MB, and it's a much less sharp version than the 4.58 GB version that won't play on any device. I have tried both DVD-R and DVD+R discs with the same result: "Supported disc not available." The iDVD 40.2 MB versions play on my MacBookPro, iMac, and Blu-Ray DVD player just fine but at a poorer visual quality. So (1) why won't these DVD's play on all of my devices? and (2) how can I get the sharp quality onto a DVD that will play on all my devices?

I also am having this problem. I purchased a DVD from Amazon which appears to be a burned DVD from their disc on demand service. It will not play and I get the same message in the DVD player "supported disc not available" I also tried instructions to burn another disc in a cdr file as well as dragging the video file directly onto the DVD player app, still no luck it will not play.

I did address this with Amazon and they are issuing a refund which is great but I would rather be able to play the DVD.

The DVD does show on my desktop, when I open it there are two folders Audio_TS and Video_TS with numerous files in each. Not sure what format the DVD is in it doesn't say on the packaging. It is manufactured by a company called TGG Direct I may also contact them with the issue. My computer is an iMac purchased mid 2010.

In the next few days I am going to test on an actual DVD player which I do own and see if it plays on that.

Thanks for your response

I used Verbatim DVD-R at 8X for the 4.58 GB video that played once on my computer and now only gets the "Supported disc not available" message. I then tried a Maxell DVD+R at 4X (2x was not an option) and got the same result. I'm not sure where these discs are to be used...They are not working in desktop, laptop, or DVD player.

Is there such a thing as a DVD that will copy in HD?

You might want to start over. in iDVD, select Delete Encoded Assets from the Advanced menu. Save your project as a Disc Image. It will take a while as it encodes the assets. Burn your DVD from the Disc Image, with a different burner, at 4x speed or lower. See if your DVD will play properly.

iDVD burns standard def DVD's and you should be getting good video quality. Since your movie is less than 60 minutes duration, burn at Best Performance. I have never tried the Professional Quality setting, so can't comment on that.

Good luck with this.

Rich839's suggestion sounded reasonable (I was thinking of starting over), but when I went to iDVD, the Delete Encoded Assets option was not available (highlighted) and neither was Save as a Disc Image. Now, I had iMovie open at the time. Was that preventing me from accessing these options? Right now I am saving in iMovie, File>Share>File at 720p instead of 1080p, High resolution (Best was 16.9GB), and Better Quality (speed)...I think I used Faster before. This should result in a 2.77GB movie.
