Garageband loses audio when USB Mic mixer is connected

Hi all.

Garageband working fine with Axiom 49 > USB hub > camera adapter > iPad Pro

As soon as I connect the USB cable from the mixer, whether it's powered up or not, all audio output disappears from the iPad - speakers or headphones. Green VU meters indicate keyboard is operating selected touch instrument (no audio out when playing touch instrument on screen, either). If the mixer is "on", signal level indicated from mic as well.

Followed instructions on GarageBand for iOS: No audio when monitoring external device - Apple Support

  • Settings > General > Accessibility: Mono Audio is off
  • Settings > Garageband: Guitar Amp Crosstalk Protection is off

What am I missing? New to GB.

iPad Pro 12.5"

iOS Version 9.3.1

Garageband version 2.1

Lightning to USB 3 Camera adapter

Belkin 4-port powered UB 3.0 hub

Axiom 49 Generation 2 USB MIDI keyboard controller

Alesis MultiMix 4 USB mixer

XLR mic cable

Sennheiser e835 mic

iPad Pro, iOS 9.3.1

Update: Alesis MultiMix 4 USB is, indeed, class compliant. Connecting mixer USB > hub > camera adapter > iPad Pro results in no audio from iPad because output is being routed through USB back to the mixer. Plugged in phones per suggestion from a tech contact elsewhere and voila! Sound in the phones and level indication on the meters. So it seems the iPad is handing off audio out put to the mixer via USB.
