Q: In the photos application, all "preview" images are showing up as grey or black boxes. OS 10.10.5, photos 1.0.1

all my preview images are gone!

All i'm seeing are grey and black boxes at the albums level.

when i click on the images they appear just fine in full screen..

    Try to recreate the thumbnails by selecting several black thumbnails at once, the rotate the photos back and forth by entering first the key combination ⌘R, wait, till all photos have been rotated, then rotate them back with ⌥⌘R   option-command-R.

    i appreciate the idea. there are close to 5000 images!..

    any bulk ideas?

    Test first on a few images if it will work at all.   Otherwise forget it.

    If yes, you can select large groups of photos at once, 500 or so at time should work.

     

    Photos does not have a built-in command to recreate the thumbnails.  Rotating is what Apple recommends as well:   https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205069

    And OS X 10.10.5 and Photos 1.0.1 are very far behind - the current version of the OS is El Captan 10.11.4 and of Photos 1.5 - it would be a really good idea to get up to date - there are a ton of new features and many, many bug fixes in the 4 updates you have missed
