Q: Messages won't show pictures, crashes

The images sent to me show up as a small thumbnail of the preview app and words like "Messages image(3648blahblahnumbers)".

When I try to click on this message, a preview window pops up with the load symbol spinning. After spinning for awhile, messages crashes. It's been like this for as long as I can remember

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

    Hi,

    Open an Finder Window.

Whilst Holding down the ALT key use the go Menu > Library.

    Navigate to Messages.

In this folder should be a folder called Attachments.

Inside that should be dated items with the blah blah numbers on them.

I use Cover Flow  to look in the Folder But I also have the Modified Column showing (Finder > View menu > Show View Options).

This always me to see the date something was added.

I also display the Path Bar (Finder > View Menu)

This is where the items are stored and the Attachments folder need to be Owned by "you" and you need to have Read and Write permissions top the folder and it's contents.

    Highlight the Attachments folder.

Use the CMD+i key Get Info keystrokes

In the Info panel scroll to to the bottom and highlight your Shortname and then Unpadlock the item

The Gogwheel type icon will then show if you Own the Folder.

It should be Greyed Out (Already "done" to make you the Owner).

It is worth enabling the "Apply to Contents" to be sure.

However this is not the complete story.

As Messages is a app that can be Sandboxed (isolated from the rest so Crashes don't bring down the whole OS) there is also a Read Write Route as it were.

IN the Finder Window use the ALT key When using the Go Menu and select Library.

    This time navigate to Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages

In here is a Alias of the Attachments Folder.

    1) If you use it you show open the Folder in ~/Library/Preferences (this is where the Path Bar can help)

    2) although long winded check the Ownership of the folders from "Containers" to "Messages"

If you can't or don't have Read and Write access to all the folders in this route the Read and Write Process can not access the Alias item and the link to the actual storage place.

The Thumbnails are kept as a Cache item which is why you can see those and not the "originals"
