Q: Cannot disable WiFi on 4th gen Apple TV (only uses WiFI)

Hi there.

I have a 4th gen Apple TV that is currently only using WiFi.  I replaced a 3rd gen, which is now in a different room.  I did not have to use WiFi with my 3rd gen, but for some reason, the 4th is not working.

I have two wireless signals in my house, and when it is plugged in VIA WiFi, any computer on any WiFi can locate and use the Apple TV.  Now, I'm forced to keep it on the same WiFi signal as the main computer, since we stream from iTunes.  Whilst streaming VIA WiFi, it slows my internet speeds down incredibly.  If I attempt to play any games that require Internet (and really not that much Internet), it takes my ping from 40 to 150+.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make this work properly, that would be awesome.  Thanks!

    Many questions arise here.

You say that you cannot configure your ATV 4 to use wired ethernet, but that you would like to. That should not be difficult. You do have to enter the network settings menu, which may be different from ATV 3. I have done this, and it works fine.

Yes, if ATV is on wifi, only devices on the same network can see it for AirPlay. See Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support . If ATV is on wired ethernet, it may be visible to other wifi clients, depending on the router.

Using AirPlay over wifi does not slow your internet speed down; it's the same amount of data going through the same internet connection either way. What it does is use part of your wifi bandwidth, so that interferes with interactive processes over the same network.

SInce you now have two ATVs, I hope you have changed the name of one of them, so they can both appear in the AirPlay menu.
