Black screen for the whole time iMac is turned on

I turn on my imac and it seems to have a black screen, you can hear the monitor going round but after it does the noise (dongggg) the screen remains black. I can't see a thing.

It wont let me play music because at first I thought it would be to do with the lighting on the screen to make the Image but it won't let me do that either.

Ive had the iMac for 5 years and I don't know what to do

Please give us more information---iMac sub-Model? Mac OSX version?

You can get the submodel from the serial number. Look on the underside of the "foot" part of the stand for the serial number and enter it ino this Apple support page:

https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

That will return a sub-model like "iMac 27-inch Mid 2010."

Ive had the iMac for 5 years....

For what it's worth, this forum is for iMacs made between 1998 and 2005. We may need to get you moved to a more active forum.
