iPad date changed to 1 Jan 1970??

So I own an iPad Air and have not had any issue with it for quite some time. I have not used the iPad for quite some time, the version it is currently on is 8.1.3 which I believe was in Jan 2015. I decided to start up the iPad today and for some reason I cannot access anything. After checking the date on the device, it says that it is currently 1 January 1970. I have tried connecting to my Wifi for it to automatically choose the correct date but it wont work. I also cannot manually change the date, I have kept scrolling the days over and over only to have it go back to 1970.

Could someone please help me get my iPad working again? Why did this happen in the first place?
