thunderbolt display chaos

Thunderbolt display blinks and fizzes but not all the time. Stretches of doing fine and then substantial episodes of disfunction that look like imminent collapse yet followed by period of normal function. Episodes getting more frequent and longer. Often accompanied by zittzing noises.
