Q: Attempting to sync single folder

I would like to copy a folder of pictures that are not in iTunes  [12.3.3.17 ] to my iPhone 4 [ 7.1.2 ].  I thought that I would give iTunes a try.  Didn't go well.  I wanted to click on selected folder only, but iTunes would not let me.  See second image below.

  1. Plugged my iphone into computer.  I plugged my iphone 4 into my mac mini running 10.10.5
  2. itunes appeared
  3. You see this screen top.

  4. Click on iPhone icon.
  5. What I saw at first was a little different than the image below, but I know get becuase iTunes remembered what I did last.
  6. Click on photos, highlighted in blue.

    7. Sync was off so i clicked on "sync photos".

    8. This let me pick what folder to sync.

    9. Tried to selected folder, but iTunes would not let me.  What do I do to get selected folder?

  10. What happened was 4 files were copied to my iPhone.

  11. Bunch of files ended up in my mac folder.  Not what I wanted.

A caveat first. I have a MacBook Pro and a Dell PC W10. I use iTunes 12.3.3. on both but I sync my photos from the PC only. iTunes is nearly identical on both. With that caveat:

Delete the iPod Photo Cache. It will regenerate on the next sync.

When you attempt to sync again (after deleting the iPod Photo Cache) the Sync Photos click mark on your screenshot above will be gone. It will be blank.

Click it and then the All Folders radio button will appear checked. Click on Selected Folders instead and then a list of folders in Finder, Pictures should appear.

Select the folder you want to sync and sync it. It may prompt you if you are sure that this will remove etc...etc.  Say yes.

That's how it works for me. I am able to sync any folder of pictures I choose. Hopefully the same for you. Good luck.

EDIT:  First disconnect your phone, open iTunes, go to iTunes, Preferences, Devices and make sure that "Prevent iPods.... from syncing automatically" is checked.

Where do you keep your photos?

The "simple" way of accomplishing what I think you want, is to keep your images in iPhoto, Photos, or another photo management application, create albums of the images you want on your phone, then use iTunes to select that photo management software and then the albums you want to sync.
