I don't use an iphone and don't need the mic. I have a generation 3 matchbox ipod shuffle and my friend has a generation 4 ipod nano. Neither of us need the mic feature. Apparently Apple no longer makes the earpods that we need. Will the earpods with mics work with our ipods? That is, will they allow us to hear properly and raise/lower volume?

The control buttons on EarPods do not work with 3rd gen iPod shuffle. iPod nano 4th gen IS on the compatible list (if it has software version 1.0.3 installed).
For the 3rd gen iPod shuffle, the control buttons on the previous version of Apple headphones should work. You may be able to find them from resellers with old stock. You can also consider using an adapter that has the control buttons. For example

You can then use ANY headphones with the standard mini-stereo plug..
