You said it happens "from time to time."  If you have other USB devices connected, or use a USB hub to connect the iPod, it's possible there is interference between connected USB devices.  If you use a USB hub, the connected devices may exceed the power available on the hub.  When you have a certain combination of connected devices, the iPod has a problem connected.  At other times, it works fine.

As a test, shut down (power off) the Mac and disconnect all USB devices.  You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod.

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support

Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the Mac, by itself.  If the iPod connects reliably this way, start adding back your other devices (one at a time) to see if the problem returns.

It would still be a good test to try connecting the iPod nano with other USB devices disconnected, as described previously (including shutting down the Mac and doing a Reset on iPod).  Did you try it?

Repeat connecting iPod to the Mac by itself, but put the iPod into Disk Mode before connecting it

Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support

Is there any difference when iPod is in Disk Mode?  If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore.  If you're OK with erasing the iPod, do the Restore.  If the cause was data corruption on the iPod, the Restore should resolve the problem by erasing the iPod and reinstalling its software.

enters a white screen that says do not disconnect. Then a saying "ok to disconect" and stays there, and I can not get out, I get only resetting message.

finally the problem was the cable. For some reason, the cable works correctly for ipod classic but stopped working for the nano. I replaced and solved the problem. Thank you.
