A symbol like a paper aeroplane appears randomly near the batter charge symbol. Can anyone explain what this represents? I have an iphone 4.

Sorry marked you as correct. Gail gave the right answer. It is the LOCATION symbol it is needed if you use the find my phone app. as well as any location services. THANKS GAIL.
It is probably the Location Services symbol. That appears whenever you are using an app that you have location services turned on for:

Airplane mode ?? With it on all Wi-Fi and Cellular are off but that appears on the left side, not the right, maybe iOS 7 is different. Are you perhaps talking about Bluetooth?
