Wondering if anyone can help me. When I turned my iMac on today it made a few ticking sounds then a white screen came up, then a small folder icon with a "?" started flashing. How can I fix it? What has happened to my files?? 😮

if you have ElCapitan, DiskUtility looks a bit different than in the support page that thunderzzz posted:
instead of choosing the first aid tab you just choose "firstAid" and then it does the repair disk:
