Alternating row color doesn't affect spreadsheet?

I have a document with two spreadsheets. In one, I select alternating row color, and it works. In the other larger more complicated one, it will not affect what I see whether it is checked or not, not matter what color I put in there as an option.

The spreadsheets were both imported together from Sheets and the one that won't work does have a few formulas. If I select one of the preset cell designs, they will apply to that spreadsheet. I want to retain what I have though, just alternate the rows slightly for ease of viewing. Thanks!

If you select the table then apply cell fill color, that will over rider the alternate row color set by the table

Here is a table with Alternate checked:

But notice that when I open the cell formatter, that there is no cell fill:

If you select all the cells of the table then apply a fill color, then alternate color will be overridden:

Would it work for you to create a new table, then select all the cells in the old table where you don't get alternating row color, command-c to copy, click in new table and Edit > Paste and Match Style? You could then delete the old table.

I meant to say if I select one of the preset TABLE designs, those apply fine.

Sorry, my question is asked in a round about way. Perhaps a better way to ask is "what would cause my Numbers doc to not alternate Row Color when it is checked and a color is chosen? thanks--
