Restoring OSX 10.6.4

short back story. I recently acquired a mid 2010 Mac Pro "eight Core" 2.4

Mac Pro 5.1 - A1289 -2314-2

The Previous owner wiped the hard drive and installed Win 7 Professional (why i have no clue).

But I'm attempting to restore it to mac OSX and purchased a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard disc from apple. It will not install this OS. through some research I found that it left the factory with 10.6.4 and will not install anything lower, like the 10.6.3 i have.

So my question is this. What are my options for getting the mac os back on this tower. Is their a download that I can get for 10.6.4 or is this something I need to contact apple about?

The "Full Retail" DVD contains 10.6.3 standard.

You need 10.6.4 custom, so you will need to call them and "special order" that version, according to the table:

Mac Pro Date introduced Original OS X included Later OS X included OS X Build(s)

Mac Pro (Mid 2010) Aug 2010 10.6.4 10.7, 10.7.2, 10.7.3 10F2521, 10F2554, 11A511a, 11C74, 11D2001

If you could install the standard "Full Retail" version on an external drive on another appropriate Mac, then update it beyond 10.6.4, THEN it would boot that 2010 Mac Pro. Other Users have actually done this with good results as long as you start with the "Full Retail" version, which contains "drivers for every appropriate Mac."

Actually you can install the latest MacOS Sierra on this computer, I have one and it works fine. If there is no Mac operating system on it as you say, the you will need to boot from an external drive into MacOS. You can then go to the App Store on that drive and download MacOS Sierra. It is free. You then need to run disk utility on the boot disk, select your disk that you want to restore to a MacOS and erase it. It will ask what format you want. Make sure you give the drive a name, choose to format it as a Mac, journeyed, this should be your default and choose GUID as the boot type. Once you have done that you can run the Install MacOS Sierra that is in you application folder on your current boot disk. Select the newly formatted drive and install on it.

The other option is to buy one of the dvd's that Apple still sells. If you buy Snow Leopard 10.6.8 it works well. It allows you to connect to the App Store and you can then just download and install MacOS Sierra. When I bought the DVD it was $19.95. i bought it earlier this year.

good luck
