Reinstalling os X 10.5.8 with no disk

I was given an old macbook that has 10.5.8 installed. It runs very slow so I want to wipe it and reinstall os x. However the disk tray is broken so I was wondering if I could do it without the need for that. I know that 10.5.8 doesn't have a recovery feature so I'm finding it difficult to find a definitive solution online.

My thoughts are that I could partition the hard drive and reinstall the operation system from the partition but I'm not the most savvy mac user so I'm not entirely sure how to do that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
