How can I get netflix on my apple tv
I signed up for netflix on their website... but now how do I get it to my desktop and subsequently my apple tv?

For the Apple TV, you download the Netflix app on the Apple TV... I'm assuming you have the newest Apple TV, if you have an older AppleTV the app should be there already. Just launch the app on the apple tv and sign into your Netflix account.
