Q: mail problem

I have an iMac 21.5 2011. Got a new hard drive and upgraded to El Capitan from Lion after a hard drive crash and a corrupted external hard drive. My data was restored, but I have learned it is not simple. Now I can't get my mail working or set up iCloud. Can anyone help? On Start-up it prompts to set up iCloud and then says there is a problem with my msn account and I can't go farther. I also have a number of important folder on my computer in the mail account that I need to access.
