Weird jpeg glitch

I'm sure there's a better place on the internet to ask this question, so if anybody can direct me to that place I'd be grateful.

Anyway, I was emailed this jpg, and the icon of the image on the desktop is in color, but when I open the image in any application, it opens up black and white. Also, when I open it in Photoshop it gives me the message, "The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the ICC profile is invalid. Ignoring the profile."

Any idea what's going on?

Bill,

From what I can tell the original colour (ICC) profile that gives the image its colour space is invalid ie the embedded data that tells the file what colour(s) it has is corrupt.

I would ask for it to be emailed again, ask the sender to either use Adobe RGB or sRGB profiles.

see <http://www.color.org/>
see book Getting Colour Right by M Walker (Ilex)

Hope this helps.
