Q: Why does 2009 MacBook say "no hardware installed for wifi" after updating to El Capitan?

I just updated today, and after it finished the wifi icon had the message "no hardware installed" I checked a few other places to see what I could do and I've tried to reset the SMC both ways and the NVRAM and it still doesn't help. I've also tried to do the quick fix from network, but it doesn't even have a wifi option on network. Please help, I need to use my laptop to do some school work on the Internet very bad.

I am not able to do any of those things you linked, when I go the "network" there is no option for wifi. The wifi cannot be turned on/off either it just has then"no hardware installed" with the "x" through it, message when I click on it.

I am having the same issue as Pc_32 and unfortunately there is no way a hardware test can be ran since my laptop will not connect to any internet source. This issue occurred immediately after my laptop restarted from the "OS X El Capitan" update. I really would just like to downgrade back to my old OS, but unfortunately my Time Machine was turned off and all other resolutions I've came across also require internet access. If anyone has any information about how to resolve this issue, FROM EXPERIENCE, please respond.

There's actually nothing you can do unless you replace the wifi card located in the laptop. The problem with mine was that the software was too old on my wifi card so the software actually wasn't comparable with El Capitan. Your best and only option if you can't replace the wifi card, will be to get a wifi usb tab to use in place of a wifi card. You will have to make sure that the software for the tab is El Capitan compatible. I ended up having to go with this route and my laptop works perfectly fine now.
