macbook air 2013 to surround sound speakers

i have old school surround sound speakers which have two 3.5mm stereo inputs 1 for front and 1 for rare satellite speakers (4.1 channel speakers). i need to plug it into my macbookair and get surround sound. currently they are plugged in using an audio splitter. the sound is stereo but not surround.

what do i need?
