If you leave a lithium battery in a completely discharged state for an extended period (like six months), it can become unable to hold a charge. It's best to "exercise" the battery by regularly charging and discharging it.
There is something you can try (before taking it apart)... If you have a USB power adapter (like the type that comes with iPhone or other device), connect the shuffle's USB docking cable to it and connect the shuffle. Since this is a power-only connection, the shuffle's light should not blink orange. Does it show a color? What color is it?
If it's red, you can try repeatedly connecting and disconnecting the shuffle from power. To avoid wearing out the shuffle's headphones jack, connect and disconnect between the USB power adapter and docking cable. There are reports that this may "jump start" the battery so it can hold a charge again, for example
NOTE: If the shuffle's light is solid (not blinking) orange when connected to the USB power adapter, leave it connected for a while. Solid orange means the battery is charging. See if it turns solid green, then disconnect from power. It's possible the USB port on the computer is not supplying enough power to charge the shuffle's battery, for some reason.
