input monitor mystery

So when I record enable a track on my Macbook Pro, I am able to monitor input, as expected, without selecting the input monitor button. However, using the exact same hardware (Quartet), on my mac mini, same settings, same version Logic, I can only monitor input if button is selected. Both have auto-input monitoring de-selected. What could it be?

Make sure software monitoring is enabled.....
