How do I get my bluetooth wireless headphones to work with my macbook air?

I have a 2015 MacBook Air. I have bought bluetooth capable wireless headphones. So far I have not been able to make them work together, no sound comes through the headphones. So, I would appreciate help on what to do to enable wireless bluetooth headphones to work with my macbook.
