The serial number is the only way to find out about your Mac. Using the model number will only tell you about all of the Macs that Apple has made using that model number.
Why do you not want to use the serial number?
well im trying to sell my laptop and buyer asking me for model #, so he said he can look at my laptop... so that is the reason I'm want to know what he trying to see
Supplying a model number, such as MC572LL/A, will give you the model's specifications, but not information unique to your specific machine. Most of the time, this number is enough; the one starting with A, such as A1378, isn't as accurate.
