can i connect ipod classic 20gb to latest os

Like to find a use for my old 20GB ipod Classic - white - still so cool looking and has a great weight to it. Charging it now and still works so can it connect it to my iMac or Macbook Air both running El Capitan? If that won't work what other options are there for connecting it besides pulling out my old PC running XP.

iPod classic, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

If it has a grayish click-wheel (with integrated playback control buttons), it's a 4th gen iPod, and it works fine connected to USB on a Mac running the latest OS X and iTunes. However, the older 3rd gen iPod (with a touch-wheel and separate round control buttons) is also white and available at 20GB. A 3rd gen iPod needs to a FireWire connection to charge. I have both 3rd gen and 4th gen iPods, and they both work fine on my Mac mini running the latest OS X and iTunes.
