Q: Why are captured live videos blank

I'm connecting a Sony HVR-HD1000 camera to iMovie (2013 version) via a Firewire adaptor to Thunderbolt. I can see video and I can import video but the videos are blank? Connected this way there isn't a record button, only an import button.
