Q: Which Mac Software should I use?

I have a macbook air 13" (mid 2013).

"About this Mac," says I have "OX 10.9.5."  Does that mean I have OX Mavericks 10.9.5?  How do I decide Which software I should be using, such as, OX El Capitan, OS X Yosemite. OX Mavericks, or OS X Mountain Lion?  I use my MacBook Air to internet surf, emails, create and store primarily Word Docs and pdf;s, store iPhone photos, and back up my iPhone.  How do I decide which Mac Software to use?

I know that these are sophomoric questions and I appreciate your assistance and patience.

As long as the software you have installed is comparable with El Capitan, I suggest you upgrade to it. Most of the intervening versions of OS X are no longer available now anyway.

The first step is to backup everything.

Thanks Allen,  I am not sure what you mean about my installed software being comparable with El Capitan.  It is the El Capitan, Yosemite, Mountain Lion, etc. that I was referring to as "software."

Also, do I have to uninstall OS X or anything (such as Mountain Lion) if I have it installled before I install El Capitan?

    Thanks,

    Janet

OS X 10.9.5 is Mavericks and while it is software, it is referred to as the operating system. What Allan was referring to when he said

As long as the software you have installed is comparable with El Capitan, I suggest you upgrade to it.

is that you should check that any other software that you have installed will be compatible with El Capitan. That would be application software such as Microsoft Word and other applications that you may have installed.

You won't need to uninstall your current operating system (OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks) before doing the upgrade. As he stated you should be sure to have a backup before upgrading.
