iPod being read as external storage

This past week, my computer or iTunes will not recognize my iPod Touch. Instead, it's being read as external storage and I can't figure out how to fix it. I followed the steps provided on the iTunes/iPod help section regarding USBs (my iPod doesn't even show up listed as an USB, but under portable devices). I even reset my iPod. Still nothing. How can I fix this?
