Notification or alarm from filtered email?
I want my iPad Air to alert me with a sound when an email containing a specified text string in its Subject or From is received. Is that possible please?

Open the Mail app. Go to Mailboxes. You should see VIP at the bottom of the list. Tap on the little I in a blue circle. Tap "Add VIP..."
Then, go to Settings>Notifications>Mail>VIP>Sounds and select your desired alert.
On the iPad, yes, it was! 😊
However, something is clearly still not right. The sound I have set for VIP does not occur when an incoming email is received, it occurs only when I open the Mail app to check mail. Yet some other sound is played at the incoming time. Haven't yet established what setting controls that. For background info, the weay i'm testing this is straightforward. I have set up my BT email addresses as a VIP and using that I'm sending emails to my Gmail address from my Windows desktop PC. While listenng for sounds from my iPad on my left and my iPhone 6S+ on my right.
At present I'm getting no sounds from the iPhone, although the settings seem the same as on the iPad.
While we're discussing this (and thank you so much for your patience!) can you please clarify one aspect that I find confusing, which may or may not be relevant. Under Settings > Notifications > Mail > VIP (or any of the other email accounts), how do I interpret 'ALERT STYLE WHEN UNLOCKED'? In the current context of getting sound notifications or alerts (whatever the correct label is), what should I select, Banners or Alerts?
I was thinking to see if one could make a rule to facilitate that - but nothing comes to mind
Un like specific ringtones assigned to specific callers - one cannot assign specific sounds to emails by sender or subject

Depending on who your email account is with, you may be able to do that with ifttt.com. I use Gmail and used it just that.
You can also mark address as VIP and have a separate tone for that. It won't help with information in the subject line, though.
Do you have Do Not Disturb enabled?
After you added the contact to VIP, did you enable sound notifications for VIP?
Try a forced restart. Press and hold the Home and power buttons until the apple appears, then let go and allow to finish booting.
Alert style when locked shouldn't be relevant to the issue. I prefer Banners, though as they are, for me the best balance between getting the info I want an not being so annoying that I break the phone.
I wonder if the problem is that you're using Gmail. Gmail doesn't support push in the native mail account, only fetch.
It's a bit more complicated but, as you're using Gmail, you may want to take a look at ifttt.com. It's a website that lets you link lots of things together. Combined with an app called Pushover (app store), you can set up a recipe (ifttt.com term) that will send you an alert (or high priority alert). ifttt.com has an app called "If" that lets you set up recipes right on your phone. You might want to check out the website to get a sense of how it all works.
I just set up one and tested it for a specific address. It should be possible to set up the subject ones you want as well. I know my description sounds a bit complicated but it's actually easier than it sounds.
"...but it's actually easier than it sounds."
Hmm, not for me it isn't! I installed both apps (and even paid up my £4 to avoid the possibility of being pestered to do so) but I find it dauntingly complicated. I did persist and with the help of a very well-written tutorial here
(working on my PC) I first got a weather-based recipe working (If Rain then notify). But although I had changed the temperature units from the default F to C it reported a temperature of 50C instead of the actual which is about 12C.
Then I tried the Gmail VIP recipe (which I assume is the one you created) but although I saw a notification when I woke up my iPad, there was no sound beforehand, which is the aim. And the iPhone (on which I've also installed the app) doesn't seem to be responding at all.
Maybe when I get another spare hour I'll revisit!

Disappointing, but thanks anyway.

That sounds promising, but how do I "...mark address as VIP" please? I see no such options here in Mail on my iPad.
Ok thanks, I discovered how to make a contact a VIP.
Hopefully it will help.
Crossed in the mail! Thanks. That approach may help me devise an indirect solution.

Certainly will help, thank you.

😎
Well, not sure if I'm missing some step or setting, or whether iOS 9.3.1 sounds or notifications are buggy, but I can't get any audible alert from an incoming VIP email.
I put together my own recipe while I was responding. There is a bit of a learning curve. However, once you get the hang of it, you may find that it can be very useful.
Best of luck.
