I infer that you refer to AirPlay from these devices. Are you AirPlaying video, music, or using screen mirroring?
If you're mirroring, others can comment on the OS X settings to make that work.

Playing videos and music from the web or from a local server (iTunes, home sharing)?
Do your really have trouble playing music? The data rate is so much lower than video.
If the content is outside of iTunes then it would require mirroring, which is a lot more dependent on the network.
If on wifi try connecting ATV via Ethernet
Make sure no other activity is occuring (other streaming, browsing. network backups etc)
Test on another network
Thanks for the help. Have decided that life is too valuable to waste on what seems to be a completely pointless exercise. Will stick to my iPad.
No problem. It isn't pointless though since it is based on an issue with your network. Just be aware that it may impact something else in the future.
