Q: I opened a scam attachment: what do I do?

Dear All,

I've been rather foolish and opened an attachment that came with what is now obvious to me as a scam.  It purported to be from a bank.

I've deleted the attachment from my downloads folder.

Does anyone have advice?  Should I take further action?  Should I look out for any unusual behaviour from my Mac?  Should I download or purchase antivirus/antimalware software?

Your help greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Caroline

if you can get the last bit of info off the link "whatever.com" go here and check who owns them.

    https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=apple.com

    https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=wells-fargo.com

notice these sites generally have brick and mortar street addresses and not P/O Boxes or some lawyers office in AZ or some isolated Island in the Marinas Trench.

keep in mind this is not a 100% way of making sure of anything; but it may give you a little glimpse as to where your emails are coming from (or trying to take you to)

As long as the link you clicked didn't download something you tried to run and ask you for an administrative password to install and the mac didn't throw up a warning about where it came from the chances you have anything on your computer you didn't want are very remote and more than likely your computer is fine.

Just have that cup of coffee when you read your email or take some vitamin B-12 before you go thought your email and keep on your toes for this kind on nonsense and don't feel like there is some protocol you have to follow when you have some security question and you want to come here for insight.

    best of luck.

    J.
