updating iPhoto for 10.11.4 - why isn't it in the App Store?

I bought a new iMac which came with 10.11.4. When iPhoto wouldn't open it prompted me to update it in the App Store. But the App Store says it doesn't find an update for iPhoto.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

Apple is no longer developing iPhoto since a year and stopped selling it from the AppStore.

Only iPhoto 9.6.1 is running on El Capitan, and that version is only available from the Appstore . So you can only update iPhoto if it is showing in your Purchases history at the App Store- look at the fourth tab of the AppStore, if iPhoto appears there. Then update by deleting iPhoto and reinstalling it. See Barney's user tip:
