So, if I am reading this right... Kernel dump

So, if I am reading this correctly it is pointing straight at the nVidia card in my Mac Pro? It panicked yet again running Final Cut Pro, I had it lock up with the screen saver also. I disabled the screen saver and it stays up, but you run anything graphics intensive and it crashes....

There are no viruses currently circulating that can do any damage to OS X. At this time, anti-virus programs are unnecessary. They're not protecting you from anything. Mac users need to be aware of malware and adware threats, but rather than viruses, which install themselves, malware and adware are installed by you. There is no program you can download that will prevent you from downloading things you shouldn't from websites you shouldn't. Scam and phishing e-mails should be deleted without even being opened. The only way they'd be a problem would be if you opened them and clicked on a link in the body or downloaded an attachment.

Don't download from torrents or aggregate download sites (CNET, Download (dot) com, MacUpdate, Softpedia, Softonic, etc.) and only get your apps/plugins/extensions/drivers from either the Mac App Store or the developer's own website. That is how you can protect your computer from any garbage floating around the Internet.

You cannot conclusive identify the cause of a kernel panic without removing all third-party kernel extensions and testing the system.

The last one brings up lots of Google hits for kernel panics.

I 100% agree with the recommendations. Mac OS is not happy with AV or the developers do not know how to get it to integrate as seamless as it works with Windows, they have not developed it as long and on the range of systems Windows has and more importantly it's really not doing anything but potentially waiting around to blow something up on your mac.

If you remove them and then blow a panic I'd start looking at that card, the drivers and if it was flashed and if you updated recently, but not before then.

Apr 27, 2016 12:17 PM in response to Kristi J

it's not uncommon to stick an aftermarket GPU in a Pro 5,1. Apples current line of GPU's in their current pro systems are outdated enough to make them crippled out of the box for demanding production work.
I would try the Adobe site, possibly someone has done the same as you, has some insight. I don't know if you need to flash the Teslas but the Nvidia Titians need to be flashed for OS X if you want a GPU with more than 3GB RAM in a Mac Pro.

If it was possible to boot to windows, update the card with the drivers from Nvidia and run something intesnvie like Adobe Premiere and the card works it might not be the card, unfortunately any HW test might not know that card and give you a false positive error with it.

It doesn't seem like too long ago if you worked in graphic production, or 3D (or DTP or Audio for that matter) and you had a Mac you made PC owners very green with envy.

The 2009 5,1 has the same PCIe bandwidth as the 2013 Mac Pro Dual AMD 500 and a single K40 is faster than a single AMD 500, a single TitanX will outperform a dual 500 in GPU tasks and has twice the VRAM, and the potential to use Nvidia Pascal cards with 32GB DDR5 is now becoming at least a possibility for Mac users with older HW, not newer HW. The Iris in the Mini is sharing DDR3 with the CPU, for any GPU optimized task the mini would not be a viable comparison. Possibly your workflow is word, or excel or preview but when you get into CC or After Effects, Blender, 3dMax. Maya or any mid level video/3d package that are GPU optimized you will be comparing a card that costs more than most laptops for a specific use like the OP is using vs essentially a Mini which essentially is a low end laptop in an Apple TV form factor case there is no comparison to make about outperforming this 8 year old dinosaur,

I have a 5,1, it holds it's own against the 2014 iMacs I replaced it with and they were BTO with 16GB RAM and 4GB DDR5 6xx cards. They go used, 8 years old for more than a mini if you look for one in decent shape.

Apr 27, 2016 1:28 PM in response to benwiggy

thats the point, the Titan X is a 2015 card, the Teslas are still being developed, the Pascal Cards are backwards compatible from what i've read and you can put it in a full size Pro case and if the software is optimized to use it, it will outperform anything Apple offers to date. Otherwise you need to go TB2 to a dedicated GPU PSU and plug your cards external. Neither option is endorsed by Apple but I'm on forums where 3D artists are resorting to the older Mac Pro's because they cut down on the cost of that considerably.
