Motion IS a standalone application. It is primarily designed for making effects for Final Cut Pro X, but it is not necessary to have with FCPX nor is it necessary to have FCPX in order to create projects for other purposes. When you open Motion, just select Motion Project to work outside of the FCPX venue. You can save regular Motion Projects anywhere on your system.

    Thanks fox_m -- that's great to know.

Now, if you would be so kind, how do I get the download to resume? It is paused and doesn't restart.

I *think* you can resume the installation process by going to the Purchased tab in the App Store and the button on the right should be labelled something like "Resume". If it is labelled Open, then Motion finished downloading and is installed.

The "Purchased" tab is where I went, but only to find the "waiting. . . " button is stuck or something.

Well... that has never happened to me before, so I'm not really a reliable source for this information. From what I've been able to find:

Go into the Finder (click on the desktop) then select Go > Utilities (or type command-shift-U). Find Activity Monitor and launch it.

In the Search field at the top right, type "store".

If you're in El Capitan, find the process "storeuid" and kill it (select it and type command-option-Q).

Restart the App Store and find the download and the button should show "Resume".

If you're in an older OSX version, the process to look for is "storeagent".

    Good luck!
