Forgot password, yahoo email was hacked, had to close now it. Now I I can't reset password. What do I do?

So, how does forgetting a password result in your email account being hacked into?
YAhoo account was hacked back in September. I had to close the account. itunes account is set up with yahoo email. Apps need to be updated its asking for password. I cant get email to reset pasword. when I answer birthday date it tells me my birthday date is wrong.
