Setting a Poster Frame for iCloud Photo Sharing

The Question:

How do I set a custom poster frame for videos shared via iCloud Photo Sharing?

Use Case:

I have converted old VHS family movies into small 3-5 minute segments and want to share these clips to my family via iCloud Photo Sharing. This will allow the videos to travel with them on their iPhones.

The Problem:

These segments are stored in the Photos app. I have selected some of these segments and chosen a poster frame - this works. I right click, choose Share to iCloud Photo Sharing. The file appears in a newly shared album, but the poster frame is reverted to the first frame of video. In the case of VHS, this is a scrambled frame, or a frame that does not clearly display the contents (such as a couch, or the sky).

Right-clicking a shared video grays out the option for reselecting a poster frame.

_No_, this is not a solution. The original problem is not solved.

This dumb behaviour of the Photos software in shared albums is still there.

Software developing is a little more complicated than building a wide fan**-base with unlimited marketing budget.

Software bugs or missing features are not resolved by pinning a "solved badge" by a fan**

It most certainly is the solution as determined by the original poster - if you have a different problem then you need to start a different thread - this one is solved

If you want a new feature then you need to tell Apple - Product Feedback - Apple - posting here will accomplish nothing about adding new features

And it is not destructive to the video - no edit in Photos ever changes the original - you always can revertr to it at any time - that is what non-destructive editing is all about

That will trim the video which is destructive. I just want poster frame to work in icloud photo sharing, thats the real solution

But iCloud Photo Sharing is destructive anyway. The shared videos will be considerably reduced in file size and pixel size.If you want to share your videos in the original quality, use a different way to share them.

See: iCloud Photo Sharing - Apple Support

Videos can be up to five minutes in length and are delivered at up to 720p resolution.

What you need to do is clip of the first few frames of the video in PHotos. Double click on the video to open it in the play mode. Click on the gear button at the right and select Trim.

Move the left side of the yellow box to the right to remove the messed up frames

Now try adding that to the shared album.

Thank you - I consider this a stop-gap workaround, as this does trim some of the footage.

Despite the fact some parts begin scrambled, these are precious memories that cannot be recreated. There is value in the audio, as an example. If there aren't any other solutions (or if this is not a bug), this may be the route I'll need to take. Thank you for the recommendation.

There is another way and that's to edit the movie file in Quicktime Player 7 with Quicktime Pro. With that you can selectively remove a number of frames at the beginning of the file and save.

Select and move the right scrubber tab to the right using the right arrow on the keyboard. It moves about one frame per click. When you have what you want between the two bars use the Command(⌘)+Delete key combination to remove them from the movie.

Then save and you'll have what you want.

You can try it without purchasing Quicktime Pro from the Apple Store to see if it will work. I don't remember if it will or not as I've had QT Pro for so long.
