Apple MusicDownloading El Capitan requires a broadband internet connection.
Also, your MacBook Pro must be mid 2007 or newer to run El Capitan.
El Capitan requires 8.8 GB's of available storage space. Click your Apple top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click then click the Storage tab. Make sure there's sufficient storage space available. I'm not referring to memory.
Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support
If at some point you need to restore OS X or repair the startup disk, that also requires a broadband connection > OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
You can check your download speed here > http://www.speedtest.net
Anything less than 10 Mbps, you'll have a hard time instilling El Capitan or using OS X Recovery if at all.

Thanks for the reply. I just quit the download. I do have a broadband internet connection, and my mac book pro was purchased in (about) 2013. It has about 200 GB free of solid state disk space and 8 GB of ram. So I cannot understand why it didn't finish in 30 hrs.
Thanks again.
