Q: error "Power PC application no longer supported"

After upgrading to El Capitan I am getting the error message "Power PC application no longer supported" with my Epson Perfection 4490 scanner. Is there a patch/fix so that El Capitan can accept the drivers?  Or am I going to be stuck with purchasing a new scanner?  (And "no" the new AIO printer/scanner/fax machines do not scan remotely as well as the original epson perfection 4490 does.)

You'd have to check with Epson for updated software if you wish to use their scanning software.

Apple's compatibility list shows that it is compatible with Image Capture: Printer and scanner software available for download for your Mac - Apple Support

Just a small clarification to add to the above responses:

Your error message says "Power PC application no longer supported."  Realize that Power PC architecture has been abandoned by Apple long ago.  The last Apple operating system to natively support Power PC applications was OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which was discontinued in 2009.

So it's (way past) time to throw away your PowerPC compatible software and update it as suggested in the posts above.

The last Apple operating system to "natively" support PowerPC applications was the PowerPC version of OX X 10.4 (Tiger), which was discontinued when Apple released the Intel version of Tiger in 2006.

Intel Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard all continued to provide Rosetta so as to allow users the transparent ability to run PowerPC apps.

To those still needing to run PowerPC hardware and software in a modern Mac world, running Snow Leopard Server in virtualization has, for the most part, restored Rosetta to those who need it in Lion, Mt. Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan.

Thank you, Barney.  Your response is helpful  I was in a hurry and should have clarified.  I did also contact Epson support directly.  Their reply was that they "are looking into it" and "will get back" to me.  I was hoping someone may have tried this and already received a response from Epson or Apple.

Yes, Image Capture does work with nearly any external device to capture images.  I have used it several times in lieu of the original software.
However, Image Capture is not capable with the native software and therefore the features that make the device useful and worth having.  In my case I can scan a simple pdf using Image Capture, but can not make any image adjustments, improvements or other nifty edits with Image Capture.

I don't know why you would do that in crappy scan software as opposed to a real editing software package.

I think Vuescan would provide better capabilities than any scanner manufacturer could provide.
