Q: ssd kingston not booting

I have a Macbook Pro (13 inch, mid-2009), and I recently replaced the hard drive on it for a Kingston SSDnow UV300.

I did a fresh install using a Lion USB disk that I had from long time ago and it went ok, but now the computar is not booting anymore

it shows the Apple logo, but it stays on the spinning wheel forever (I waited for more than 20 minutes).

It's still working perfectly with the hard drive, and the SSD is working as well (I tested it on a windows pc)

What can I do to fix it?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Sorry for the confusion - how is the SSD formatted - you mention that you tested it with a PC?

Take out the SSD and install it in an enclosure.

Connect it to the MBP via USB.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key down.

The SSD icon should appear, click on it.

If the SSD boots the MBP, that is a strong indication that the internal SATA cable should be replaced.

    Ciao.

I did. I installed windows 7 on it (with NTFS) and it worked fine. On the Macbook I created a new partition (with GUID Table). I believe it's using HFS+ journaled.

Using the enclosure the SSD works fine, but when I try to boot it with the disk inside it doesn't. The OSX recognizes the disk and I'm even able to format it, but installing the OSX or booting after installing using the external cases never works, both using a caddy replacing the CD/DVD drive and on the regular HD bay. What's concerning me the most is that the original HD works fine both in the HD bay and inside the caddy

Now your saying you have a Windows operating system on the SSD.  That will not work on the Mac.  You will have to install it via Bootcamp.

Exactly where do you have Lion installed?  Does the SSD have two volumes?

    Ciao.

    Our posts crossed.

Does the SSD boot the MBP externally?

Does the SSD boot the MBP when installed in the MBP in place of the original HDD?

If YES to the first question and NO to the second question, a new SAT cable should be installed inside the MBP.

It does not matter if the original HDD works inside the MBP.  The cable is the problem.  These forums have a number of discussions of a similar nature.

    Ciao.

It boots externally using OSX Lion, but internally it doesn't. But right now i'm using it on the Macbook (in the HD bay) after installing Windows 7 and it seems to be working fine.

When this problem first came out i thought it might be a HD problem so I purchased the SSD, but when I realised that the SSD wasn't working ok I also replaced the HD cable so right now I'm not sure if I should return them or if it's a software issue, since it's working if i use windows.

    Any ideas?

Are you saying that it is working with Windows but not OSX internally?  i would find that to be very odd.

    Ciao.

Exactly. It's working ok with windows right now, and with a good speed (at least for a device this old). But when I try to install OSX it gets stuck for hours or fails during the process.

I saw on a forum someone with a related problem that clamed solving it with a firmware update, but I'm not being able to find more info about it.

It is the HDD cable. The original cable that came with the 2009 models can't handle the speed of a SSD. There is, Was, a replacement cable that could handle the speed of a SSD but I'm not sure you can find them anymore.

The original cable will work fine with a slower spinning HDD.

So even if the SSD and the cable are working fine if i use Windows, I'll have to replace them to use mac os? Sorry for the question, but this seems really weird for me...

Well all I know is several years ago this same thing happened with tons of 2009 models. In 99.9999% of the cases installing the updated cable solved the problems.

That's weird because i replaced the cable a few weeks ago, and the new one seems to be working ok on the windows partition or when i'm using the caddy. I'll see if i can get it replaced again then...
