How can I get my Outlook 2011 un-stuck updating messages?

Today, I tried to purge my deleted email files in Outlook 2011 (14.2). While doing so, I received a notification to rebuild my database, which I did. Subsequently, while I can send email, I am unable to receive email now and the progress bar to receive mail is stuck in, "updating message list." My incoming servers is a pop.server.net. Is there any way to get un-stuck relative to the "updating message list?"
