Q: Deleting photos and videos

I have hundreds of photos and videos on iPhone 5s. Storage issue, both on phone and ICloud. Already buying 50GB storage on cloud.

On my phone, have used 26.1 GB  (17.7GB in Photos and Camera and 2.4 GB in What's App)  and only have 118M available.

Obviously I need to delete some photos and videos, but when I choose delete option,  phone says this action will delete off ALL my devices.

Does this mean I will lose photos on my iPhone, iPad and photos downloaded on my MAC? Or just iPhone and iPad?

If the photos in the iDevices are synced through iCloud - that is what is in danger of getting deleted as you reduce the space taken up by them

The iCloud works more as a syncing device and if you delete stuff on the iDevice - it goes from the iCloud as well

not so the mac - the pictures imported to Photos on the Mac will not be deleted with iCloud deletions

Just a word of caution - if possible - choose one picture to delete and watch what happens to it across your devices

All really means all ..... If you are using iCloud Photo library. This does not actually store the photos for offline cloud storage. It does store them as long as you don't delete them. If you delete them on one device, they are deleted everywhere. All that iCloud Photo lIbrary really does is keep your photos in sync across devices and makes them accessible across all devices.

Take take a look at this for more information. If you are using iCPL, you need to back your photos up to your computer and a hard drive before you delete them from the phone, iPad or computer.

So, how do I get my phone storage under control?  (I've Optimized in Settings)

I can't take photos, videos and other tasks sometimes on my phone. All my devices are on iCloud. I don't want to lose photos that have synced to my MAC, but don't want them all on my phone using all my phone's storage. I really have tried researching this and am still unsure how to proceed.

Did you download the photos from iCloud and then transfer them to an external drive or store them in a folder on your computer? Copied from the support Artie's boys.

iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support

    Do I need a Backup?

iCloud Photo Library stores all of your original photos and videos in iCloud, but we always recommend you keep back up copies of your Library. You can download your photos and videos from iCloud to your computer and store them as a separate library, transfer them to another computer with Image Capture or Photos, or store them on a separate drive.

IF you actually download the photos to your computer - forget about iCloud - I'm talking about saving the photos to the hard drive or to an external hard dive - if you do that, you can delete the photos from your devices to free up space.

Bear in mind that if you do that, then your photos will disappear from the iCloud Photo Library on your devices which means you are no longer keep all photos on all devices at the same time, but is that so important to you as long as you have copies of all of the photos stored on a drive or your computer?

Per apple support, walked thru shutting off iCloud on phone. Still have ICloud on MAC. Created folder on Mac for phone backup of photos. Used Image Capture. Downloaded photos to new folder. Still haven't deleted from phone. Images on phone much clearer than what is appearing on my MAC screen. Did I do something wrong.? Was there a problem with resolution due to selecting "Optimization" on iPhone causing images to download poorly to MAC? Or...is it simply due to the smaller images on phone being clearer than MAC due to size of images appearing on large MAC screen?

Your original, full-sizedphotos are stored in iCloud Photo Library according to the FAQ website that I referenced above. I am guessing that the photos are not fully downloaded and that is why they are not very clear.

I remember a while back trying to download photos that my son shared with me in a Shared iCloud Photo Album. There were quite a few photos in the album and when they were all done downloading, some of them were not very clear. I deleted them and download them again and noticed that there was a white downloading circle in the bottom right corner of each photo and when the circle completely filled up it would disappear indicating that the photo was in fact completely downloaded.

My point is, try downloading them again. Download a few at a time and experiment to see how it goes.

Thank you so much for your prompt responses.

Created new MAC photo backup folder, downloaded iPhone images again. The 2 new photo backup MAC folders are the same quality. I then compared images in both MAC new folders to the phone images. Is some loss of clarity possibly due to the difference in devices/settings? Such as,  color resolution, increased size of photo on MAC screen vs small image on iPhone?  Just not the same crispness.

Additionally, while trying to reduce my photo files, I notice that when I delete a photo on MAC  in photo library (without deleting it from phone), it reappears on MAC as photos to import. Guess it picks up from phone. Why? My iPhone photos are no longer "ON" for the cloud. ??? Just have the MAC set up for the cloud for photos.

I'm really not sure why the photos aren't as crisp when you download them as they appear on the phone. Certainly the smaller screen size would account for a little more clarity on the phone, all things being equal, but the only other thing I can think of is that they aren't as clear in the full resolution as you assume that they should be. In other words, they were never real crisp to begin with and once you see them on the Mac, it is evident. Its just a thought and you may know better than I would.

As to your second point, the photos must appear in the camera roll on the phone which is the only place from which they can be imported by using the cable and connecting the phone to the Mac. Look in the Camera Roll album in the photos app on the phone and see if the photos are there.
