I need to boot a new SSD for my mid-2012 Macbook Pro. The original hard drive is dead, and I have no way to clone or load Recovery HD on the new SSD. I have formatted the SSD, but I need to be able to boot it and load my files/apps from TimeMachine. Possible?

Boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys and you should get a display like this:
You will be connected to the Apple servers and by following the directions, install the original OSX that came with your MBP.
A solid Internet connection will be required.

Doesn't this assume that I have the OSX on my new SSD already? There's nothing on it right now. I need to load the OSX on the new SSD.
I don't have the original OSX. It came loaded with the machine, no disk.
You do not need a disk.

You said in your post that the SSD was already formatted. I assume that means Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If not, when you see the 4 option menu, choose Disk Utility>Erase first and format the SSD. Then use the OSX option to install the original OSX.
After you have installed the OSX, You can boot the MBP and then you will have to deal with the user data from the old HDD.

Thanks! This is what I needed. I assume that I'll be able to restore the user data from my Time Machine backups from the old disk. But, I've read that there are issues using the TimeMachine backups from another hard drive. True?
